DALLAS - A newborn baby delivered before her mother died from injuries sustained in a North Texas crash has died.
Ashlyn Leona Womack was placed on life support at Methodist Dallas Medical Center, which is where doctors and nurses worked around the clock in an attempt to save the infant.
ShaCela Womack, 25, was nine months pregnant when she suffered fatal injuries in an early-morning crash on August 5. Womack had just left a baby shower in Dallas and her 15-year-old son, KeShawn, was driving. The teen had a learner's permit and was legal to drive, according to his grandmother.
During the drive, the teen lost control of the vehicle, leading to a crash in which the vehicle flipped over several times in far southwest Dallas.
While the mother was pronounced dead soon after arriving to the hospital, doctors were able to deliver her baby. Lavonne Gilbert, Womack's mother, said they had been praying for the infant.
"We're just praying," Gilbert said last week. "And we want everyone to pray with us that Ashlyn will survive."
Womack's 5-year-old daughter, who was also in the car at the time of the crash, suffered a fractured skull. She is expected to recover. The teen who was behind the wheel also survived the crash.
"When he saw me after the accident, he said, 'Grandma, I'm so sorry,'" Gilbert said. "He was crying, and I said, 'Darling, no one blames you. We love you.'"
